Mary Washington Junior Tyler Carey and Head Coach Todd Helbling Earn Top VaSID All-State Honors

Mary Washington junior Tyler Carey and head coach Todd Helbling earned the top yearly honors on the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division Men's Tennis teams, leading a group of eight CAC players on the squad.

Carey was named the State Player of the Year, while Helbling earned Coach of the Year accolades.

Six Mary Washington players received the distinction as All-State all-stars. Carey and Evan Charles along with the duo of Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin claimed first team doubles honors.

Carey, Gilmore, Alex Blakhin and David Lunding-Johansson landed on the singles first team for the Eagles, while Charles and Griffin nabbed second team singles recognition.

A pair of Christopher Newport student-athletes, Steven Boslet and Chiraag Shetty were named second team singles.

Carey led Mary Washington to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 21-6 record, as the junior gained Player of the Year honors with a 17-12 overall mark at number one singles and a 19-11 mark at one doubles with Evan Charles, primarily against nationally-ranked opponents. Carey was named CAC Player of the Year for the second straight year, and was a first team selection in singles and doubles, and individually advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both singles and doubles.

Helbling repeated as State Coach of the Year after leading UMW to a 21-6 record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament third round. The Eagles gained the CAC Championship for the 14th straight year, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th straight time, all under Helbling's tutelage.

Mary Washington led all schools with two doubles teams and six singles competitors on the all-state teams.
