Guzzone's Three-Set Singles Victory Lifts #4 St. Mary's Past #5 York in CAC Men's Tennis First Round

St. Mary's senior J. Guzzone's three-set victory at No. 4 singles propelled the fourth-seeded Seahawks to a tight 5-4 triumph over fifth-seeded York in the first round of the CAC Men's Tennis Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Guzzone outlasted York's Nathaniel Hoskins 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 to send the Seahawks to the semifinal round for the fourth straight year. St. Mary's will now face top-seeded Mary Washington in the semifinals on Wednesday, April 22 in Fredericksburg, Va.
Wednesday's other semifinal will feature second-seeded Christopher Newport hosting third-seeded Salisbury.
York held a 2-1 lead following doubles play, earning 8-5 and 9-7 victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. York's Rory Handlin and Zach Hanson captured an 8-5 win at No. 2, while Hoskins and Matt Rosenkrantz tallied the 9-7 win at No. 3. At the No. 1 position, St. Mary's Andrew Gear and Mark Hardesty earned an 8-1 win.
In singles, St. Mary's went up 4-2 behind three consecutive singles wins. Gear earned a win at No. 1 singles following Tyler Cheatham's Gear leading 5-0. Hardesty then posted a straight-set victory at the second flight, dropping only three games. At No. 3, John Feighner picked up a 7-5, 0-6, 7-5 win to push the Seahawk lead to 4-2.
York's Kaltrin Bullaj pulled the Spartans within 4-3 with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 singles, followed by Zach Hanson's 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles for York to deadlock the match at 4-4.
In non-conference play, No. 16 Mary Washington closed out its regular season with an 8-1 setback to No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The Eagles lone point came at No. 2 doubles, as Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin earned an 8-6 win over Noah Joachim and Nicholas Garcia.
The Blue swept all six singles matches, en route to the win, winning five of the six matches in straight sets.
