NATIONAL CHAMPION! York Senior Kyle Walthall Wins National Title in 100 Breaststroke

York senior Kyle Walthall captured the national championship in the 100 breaststroke on day three of the NCAA Swimming Championships on Friday evening in Greensboro, N.C.

With the title, Walthall earns the fifth men's gold medal in CAC history at the NCAA Championships. This marks the fourth straight year that a CAC swimmer has won a gold medal at the national meet, as Mary Washington's Alex Anderson won at least one gold and four total titles over the past three years.

Walthall edged Michael Lagieski from Washington University (MO) by .03 seconds in the final in a school and conference record time of 53.67 seconds. That time was .10 seconds faster than the previous record time that he swam in Friday morning's prelims.

Walthall trailed at the final turn but a powerful push over the final 25 yards enabled the senior Spartan to capture the national championship.

Walthall will compete in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday. He enters the competition with the second fastest time in Division III this year. Last year he finished eighth in the event.

Also competing on Friday were Mary Washington's Dallas Tarkenton, Anna Corley and the 800 freestyle seniors Stephanie Hallock, Hannah Hagy, junior Shannon Coryell and Corley. Tarkenton placed 29th in the 200 butterly at 1:52.70, Corley finished 29th in the 100 breaststroke at 1:07.66, and the 800 freestyle relay finished 21st at 7:50.49.

Hallock, Corley and Walthall will compete in individual events on Saturday's final day of the NCAA Championships, while the UMW 400 freestyle will also compete.
