Mary Washington Swimming Sweeps Three CAC Swimming Opponents Over The Weekend

Mary Washington swept St. Mary's, Marymount and Salisbury in dual and tri-meet action over the weekend, clinching the top spot in the CAC standings in both men's and women's swimming.

Friday, Mary Washington swept a dual meet from St. Mary's College on Friday evening at Goolrick Natatorium. The Eagle men won, 127-70, and the women won, 121-84.

For the UMW women, winners included the 200 yard medley relay (Scott, DeSmit, Lesiuk, Crockett) at 1:53.33; Lindsay Ancellotti in the 200 freestyle (2:01.40) and the 500 freestyle (5:26.43); Elizabeth Lewan in the 50 freestyle (26.52); Cameron Figuers in the 400 IM (4:43.32); Adriana Lesiuk in the 100 freestyle (55.72); Sarah Crockett in the 200 backstroke (2:11.99); and the 200 free relay (Lesiuk, Boyar, DeLuca, Lewan) at 1:44.27).

The Eagle men saw wins from the 200 medley relay (1:41.82); Nick Eckhoff in the 1000 freestyle (10:09.10) and the 100 freestyle (48.29); Billy Norfolk in the 200 free (1:48.95) and the 200 butterfly (1:55.27); Austin Clark in the 50 free (22.23); Stephen Clendenin in the 200 IM (1:58.42) and the 500 freestyle (4:56.37); Cesare Zannoni in the 200 backstroke (2:07.40); and the 200 free relay (1:30.74).

St. Mary's sophomore Kelly Heyde broke her own record in the 1000 freestyle as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team suffered just its second loss of the season, snapping a four-meet win streak.  Heyde  slashed her record from November 12, 2010 (10:44.94) by two seconds as she touched the wall first in the 1000 free event in 10:42.43.  She picked up gold medals as well in the 200 individual medley (2:12.18) and the 200 butterfly (2:08.70).

Saturday at Marymount, Mary Washington swept a dual meet at Marymount from the Saints as well as Salisbury University. The Eagle women topped the Saints, 129-75, and beat Salisbury, 138-67, while the UMW men defeated Marymount, 158-42, and Salisbury, 133-72.

Winners for the women included the 200 yard medley relay (1:54.24); Lindsay Ancellotti in the 1000 freestyle (11:15.66); Jessica Singer in the 200 freestyle (2:00.27); Adriana Lesiuk in the 50 freestyle (25.58); Megan DeSmit in the 200 IM (2:17.82); Kelly Scott in the 100 butterfly (1:02.85); and Cameron Figuers in the 500 freestyle (5:23.72).

The men saw wins from the 200 medley relay (1:38.90); Brad Dunn in the 1000 freestyle (10:30.40); Jack McHugh in the 200 freestyle (1:51.74); Nick Eckhoff in the 200 IM (2:01.74); Stephen Clendenin in the 100 butterfly (54.06); Austin Clark in the 100 freestyle (48.75); Andrew Garafolo in the 500 free (5:01.25); and Peter Slattery in the 100 breast (1:02.62).

Saturday at Frederick, Md., Hood swept a dual meet vs. Frostburg State.

The Hood men's swim team (3-4, 1-4 CAC) won eight events en route to a 121-78 victory over FSU (1-7, 0-3 CAC) while the Blazer women's team captured nine events in securing their first victory of the season, 112-56.

In the men's meet, Robbie Ennis, Connor Eliff and Andrew Bodine were all double winners for the Blazers in their respective individual events. That threesome also helped the Blazers to a narrow victory in the 200 medley relay.

Ennis paced the field in the 100 breast (1:07.97) and the 200 IM (2:12.31). His time in the 200 IM was a season-best. Eliff took top honors in the 100 free (54.80) and the 200 free (2:01.23), both season-bests. Bodine won the 50 free (23.23) and the 100 back (1:01.23), lowering his 100 back time by 1.85 seconds.  Matt Benoit was a winner in the 100 fly (1:02.04) to round out Hood's first-place finishers. He also took third in the 50 free (23.98).

In the women's action, Arielle Harding broke a 21-year old school record in the 100 breast with a clocking of 1:10.96, lowering the previous standard of 1:12.06 by N. Cairns from 1990. Harding also paced the field in the 200 free (1:09.50) and the 100 free (57.93). Her 100 free time was also a season-best.

Lacey Creelman and Andrea Haines went 1-2 in the 1000 free, finishing within five seconds of each other. Haines was also third in the 500 free (7:05.23).  Dominique Osterman captured third in both the 200 free (3:34.80) and the 100 back (2:22.65). Kristen Kucharski swam a season-best and won the 100 back (1:12.02) and came in third in the 50 free (28.90).

At York, Pa., the Spartans celebrated senior day. but dropped both meets to visiting Ursinus.  The YCP men fell by a 142-120 margin while the women lost 143-114.

The York women picked up a pair of individual triumphs Saturday as Michaela Guild and Anna Schuster notched victories. Guild, who is having a tremendous season in her junior year, won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:37.34. Schuster, a Spartan rookie, snagged the win in the 100 butterfly with a 1:04.65.

The YCP men opened up the men's side of the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Bean, Tobin, Andy Woods, and Hilt combined for the triumph as they posted a 1:39.97.  Individually, the Green and White registered three wins, two of which came from Jamie Hicks. Hicks posted a 1:03.96 to take the 100 breaststroke while he also snagged the win in the 200 breast with a 2:20.57.
