Mary Washington Completes Swimming Sweep; Women Win 21st-Straight Title While Men Gain 11th-Straight Crown

Mary Washington completed its three day sweep  at the 2011 CAC Swimming Championship - winning 28 of 36 first-place awards during the weekend - to win its 21st-straight women's swimming title and 11th-straight men's crown.

The Eagles scored 1,013 points on the men's side, more than doubling second-place York's total of 553.5.  St. Mary's (499), Salisbury (430.5) and Marymount (284) rounded out the men's top five.

The UMW women didn't quite reach four digits in their team total (982), but won the title going away from second-place St. Mary's (628).  Salisbury (386) edged Marymount (372) and York (334) for third place in the team standings.

Individually, UMW senior Stephen Clendenin, a seven-time gold medalist over the weekend, became the first competitor in conference history to win the Men's Swimmer of the Year Award three times.  Several former UMW swimmers were honored twice, but Clendenin, the CAC Rookie of the Year in 2008 and Swimmer of the Year from 2009-11, is the first three-time winner.

On the women's side, junior Anna Macedonia became the second Marymount athlete to capture the Women's Swimmer of the Year award.  Macedonia, who won three individual events over the weekend, joins 2008 honoree Ashley Smith as the Saints who have won the Women's Swimmer of the Year award.

Rookie of the Year recognition was presented to Mary Washington's Jessica Singer and Cameron Hedquist of host St. Mary's.  Singer is the seventh UMW athlete in the last eight years, and the 10th Eagle since the inception of the award in 1997, to win the Women's Rookie of the Year award.  Hedquist is the third SMC swimmer to win the Men's Rookie of the Year award.

Coach of the Year honors went to Abby Brethauer, UMW's first-year coach, and St. Mary's veteran mentor Andre Barbins.  It's the 12th time in 21 seasons that a UMW coach won the Women's Coach of the Year Award.  Barbins captured the Men's Coach of the Year award for the first time after winning the Women's Coach of the Year award three times in his career.

In Sunday's competitions, Singer started UMW's final run to the women's title by winning the 1,650 freestyle (17:36.64) - the first of four Eagles to finish among the top six in the race.  Brad Dunn had similar success in the men's 1,650 freestyle (16:35.31), and UMW finished the event with the top three finishers and four of the top five.

The UMW women also took top honors in the 100 freestyle - Adriana Lesiuk (53.01) - and the 200 breaststroke - Megan DeSmit (2:24.57) - before completing the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.  The Eagles won 12 of 18 championship races during the weekend.  The Eagles had at least four of the top eight finishers in four of Sunday's five individual races.

Macedonia (2:02.59) outdueled UMW standout Sarah Crockett (2:07.05) in the 200 backstroke to pick up her third individual gold medal of the weekend.  St. Mary's sophomore Kelly Heyde also earned three first-place awards, the last in the 200 butterfly (2:05.52) Sunday night.  Heyde's time Sunday was an automatic national qualifying performance.

After Dunn's win in the opening men's event, Clendenin touched the wall first in the 200 backstroke (1:50.37), followed by victories by Austin Clark in the 100 freestyle (46.31), William Norfolk in the 200 butterfly (1:52.10) and the 400 freestyle relay team.

Clark joined Clendenin as three-time individual gold medalists for the weekend.  Similar to the women's races, UMW has at least four of the top eight finishers in four of Sunday's five individual events.

St. Mary's sophomore Billy DeBoissiere broke up UMW's winning streak by taking top honors in the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.51.  It was just the second men's race of the weekend not won by a Mary Washington swimmer.
