Christopher Newport Men's Soccer Locks Up Top Seed; Salisbury, Frostburg State Secure Final Two Playoff Spots
Christopher Newport secured the top seed and homefield advantage in the CAC Men's Soccer Tournament for the second straight year with a 3-1 victory over Marymount on the final day of the regular season on Wednesday. The road to the title will now go through Newport News, Va., as the Captains (13-2-1, 8-0-1 CAC) will host a semifinal on Wednesday.
Despite a 3-1 loss at York, St. Mary's (11-6, 7-2) earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the CAC postseason. The Seahawks entered Wednesday's regular season finale having already locked up its seed. St. Mary's will host the other CAC semifinal on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Mary Washington clinched the No. 3 seed with a 4-3 triumph at Penn State Harrisburg, which eventually knocked the Lions out of playoff contention. The Eagles (12-4-1, 7-2) will host No. 6 Frostburg State (6-10-2, 4-5) in Saturday's opening round. Frostburg State defeated Southern Virginia 3-0 on Wednesday to clinch the final playoff spot via a head-to-head tiebreaker over Penn State Harrisburg (also 4-5 in conference play).
York entered Wednesday's action having already secured a postseason bid, but moved up to the No. 4 seed with a 3-1 home triumph over St. Mary's. The Spartans (7-8-2, 5-3-1) will host No. 5 Salisbury (8-8-2, 4-3-2) on Saturday. The Sea Gulls downed Wesley 6-1 to clinch their playoff spot.
