Salisbury and St. Mary's Advance to CAC Men's Soccer Championship
CAC Men's Soccer Tournament Bracket
Top-seeded Salisbury and sixth-seeded St. Mary's both posted victories in the semifinals of the CAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon, setting up a championship tilt in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Salisbury, the CAC regular season champions, tallied early goals in each half to down fourth-seeded Mary Washington, 2-0. With the win, the Sea Gulls (11-3-3) will host the CAC Championship game for the third time in the last five seasons.
Salisbury (11-3-3) got on the board in the 5th minute of play as Brooks Zentgraf finished a header off a corner kick from Matt Greene for the 1-0 SU edge. Leslie Umunna added an insurance goal just after halftime for the Sea Gulls off a feed from Brad Martinelli. UMW fell to 12-5-1 with the loss.
St. Mary's (7-8-2), which needed a victory on the final day of the regular season to qualify for the playoffs, defeated second-seeded York 1-0 in overtime to advance to the title game for the first time since 1992. The victory was the second straight road playoff triumph for the Seahawks, who become the first-ever No. 6 seed to make it to the CAC men's soccer title game.
York (9-7-2) dominated the stat sheet with a 24-9 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks, but St. Mary's was the team to find paydirt as the Seahawks buried their only shot on goal throughout the contest. In the 96th minute, a York defender misplayed a back-pass to goalkeeper Charlie Johnson, and St. Mary's Zach Fontenot swooped in and lofted a shot over Johnson for the dramatic game-winner.
