Three First-Half Goals Lifts Salisbury Past Wesley In CAC Title Men's Soccer Match

Salisbury exploded for three goals in a 19-minute stretch midway through the first half, and keeper Greg Wellinghoff posted the shutout as the Sea Gulls won the 2008 CAC men's soccer title with a 3-0 victory over Wesley.

The Sea Gulls (15-3-3), who finished third in the regular season standings, extended their unbeaten streak to nine matches (7-0-2).  Salisbury won its second-straight CAC championship and seventh in the last 10 years.

Wesley (11-7-3), the fourth seed in the CAC Tournament, appeared in the CAC title match for the first time in team history.

Ben Lisle scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 15th minute from the top of the box after a cross from deep in the corner.  Lisle's team-leading 11th goal of the season was assisted by Steven Merrow.

Salisbury added insurance goals by Kyle Sterling (unassisted in 29th minute) and Chris Finney (assisted by Scott Sparrow in 34th minute) to give Wellinghoff breathing room in the Sea Gull goal.  Wellinghoff registered three saves on seven shots for his eighth shutout of the season.

Wesley keeper Nick Talarico was credited with six stops on 22 Salisbury attempts.

Salisbury earned an automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Championship Tournament and will advance to the national playoffs for the second-straight year and eighth time in the last 10 years.
