Cirillo Lifts Salisbury Men's Lacrosse Past Denison in OT, Into NCAA Final Four; York Edged by Gettysburg in OT
Thomas Cirillo buried the game-winner less than a minute into overtime to propel third-ranked Salisbury past sixth-ranked Denison, 11-10, in the NCAA quarterfinals on Wednesday at Sea Gull Stadium.
Seventh-ranked York also saw its quarterfinal contest stretch to overtime, with the Spartans falling to fifth-ranked Gettysburg, 7-6, in dramatic fashion.
With the victory, Salisbury (21-1) advances to the Final Four, where it will meet Gettysburg (17-2) on Sunday. The Sea Gulls will host the Bullets on Sunday, time TBD.
The Final Four appearance marks the sixth in the last seven years for the Sea Gulls. Fourth-ranked Tufts (19-2) will host eighth-ranked St. Lawrence (18-2) in the other national semifinal.
After Denison tallied back-to-back scores in the final four minutes of regulation to send the game into OT, Cirillo came through with the game-winner just 37 seconds into the extra period to send SU back to the semifinals. James Burton (2g, 2a), Garrett Reynolds (2g, 1a), Cirillo (2g) and Carson Kalama (2g) led the SU attack in the victory.
York, meanwhile, saw its historic season come to a close with a record of 18-4. The Spartans tied the game, 6-6, with 1:46 left in regulation before the Bullets tallied game-winner 36 seconds into overtime.
Brendan McGrath (2g, 1a) and Hunter Davis (2g) led the York offense, while Josh Kluver caused three turnovers and scooped up five ground balls.
