Salisbury Rolls Past Stevenson, 12-4, Into NCAA Quarterfinals
The No. 8 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team faced a three-hour delay to the start of its NCAA Division III tournament second-round contest against No. 7 Stevenson after being stuck in traffic on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, but the Sea Gulls came off the bus ready to play and took a 12-4 victory at Mustang Stadium on Saturday night to advance to the NCAA quarterfinal round.
Salisbury improves to 17-4 with the win, while Stevenson's campaign comes to a close at 16-5.
With the win, Salisbury advances to the national quarterfinals for the 21st straight season, and will meet No. 4 Lynchburg on Wednesday. The game location and time has yet to be determined. Lyncburg topped Aurora 19-8 on Saturday to qualify for the final eight.
Nathan Blondino (4g, 1a), Thomas Cirillo (3g) and James Burton (2g, 1a) spearheaded the SU attack, combining for nine of the Sea Gulls 12 scores. Andrew Ternahan collected a game-high seven groundballs, while goalkeeper Connor Anderson totaled 12 saves to earn the win.
The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in the win. Salisbury pushed its lead to 6-1 at the half, before outscoring the Mustangs 4-2 in the third to break things open on the way to the eight-goal margin of victory.
