Nine-Goal Surge Lifts Salisbury Men's Lacrosse To A 14-5 Victory Over Frostburg State In The 2015 CAC Title Match
Sophomore attack Carson Kalama scored three of his game-high four goals during a nine-goal Salisbury run to lead the 8th-ranked Sea Gulls to a 14-5 victory over 19th-ranked Frostburg State in the 2015 CAC Men's Lacrosse Championship game.
The regular-season champion Sea Gulls (15-4), who were the top-seed in the CAC Tournament, scored nine-straight goals from late in the second quarter through the third quarter to break the game open. It is the 19th SU championship since joining the CAC in 1995.
Salisbury scored the first four goals of the contest, with Thomas Cirillo and James Burton each contributing a goal and an assist during the initial surge. Frostburg State (16-3), the second-place team in the regular-season and second-seed in the tournament, had cut Salisbury's second-quarter lead to 4-2 with consecutive goals by Greg Bourne and Tate Rolland in a 70-second span.
The Bobcats were held scoreless during the third quarter, during which Kalama scored three times as the Sea Gulls extended their 6-2 halftime lead to 13-2. Sean Fitzgerald and Nathan Blondino each contributed two points in the third quarter.
FSU keeper Tom Kraemer rejected a career-best 19 of Salisbury's 33 shots while Connor Anderson improved to 13-2 in goal for the hosts by recording 16 saves on 20 shots in 57 minutes.
Salisbury earns the CAC's automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, while Frostburg State will wait and hope for an at-large invitation when the tournament is announced on Sunday night (May 3).
