#1 Salisbury And #4 Stevenson Meet Saturday For 2012 CAC Men's Lacrosse Title

It will be the fifth consecutive year - and the last time - Salisbury and Stevenson play for the Capital Athletic Conference men's lacrosse title.

Saturday's 2 p.m. clash was set when the top-seeded Gulls downed York, 19-6, and second-seeded Stevenson edged St. Mary's, 10-8, in Wednesday's semifinals.

It's the fifth-straight year the Mustangs (14-3) will play the defending national champion Gulls (18-0) for the CAC title.  Salisbury has won three of the four, including last year's 16-14 decision.  The visiting team has won the title each of the last three years.

In an afternoon semifinal at Salisbury Wednesday, No. 1 Salisbury advanced to its 17th-consecutive CAC tournament championship game with Wednesday's 19-6 victory over York.  Salisbury has played in the conference championship game every season since the Sea Gulls joined the CAC and is looking for its 16th CAC title.

Senior attackman Matt Cannone led the team with eight points in the game on three goals and five assists. Cannone is now tied for third on Salisbury's all-time career assists list with 138 assists.  The Sea Gulls started the game off quickly by scoring two goals in the first 57 seconds of the game. Senior attackman Kyle Quist scored the first goal of the game just 38 seconds into the game before senior midfielder Sam Bradman scored 19 seconds later to give the Gulls an early 2-0 lead. Bradman led the team with four goals on the day and added two assists for six points.  Bradman's effort allowed him to move up to No. 4 on the program's all-time career goals list with 183 and No. 7 on the all-time career assists list with 98.

The Gulls took a 5-1 lead into the second quarter and added five more goals in the period to take a 10-2 into the half. Bradman and senior attackman Erik Krum both netted two scores in the quarter.  Salisbury dominated the half outshooting the Spartans 24-16, winning 10-of-13 faceoffs and converting on 10-of-12 clear attempts.  Senior midfielder Cory Nowak started the third quarter with a goal just 11 seconds into the period to start a seven-goal quarter. Cannone led the Gulls in the quarter with all three of his scores to help the team take a 17-2 lead into the fourth period.  The Sea Gulls' final tally came from junior midfielder Ryan Clarke to cap off the game.  York was led by attackman Tyler Hutson with three goals in the game.

The other semifinal was an evening showdown at Mustang Stadium, Tyler Reid and Stephen Banick scored unassisted goals in the last eight minutes of the game to break an 8-8 tie and lift Stevenson to the 10-8 win over St. Mary's.

Banick had four points on two goals and two assists while Reid finished with a team-best three goals for the winners.  Reid's first goal of the game, midway through the second half, capped a four-goal surge that sent the Mustangs to the halftime break with a 5-1 lead.  Stevenson's lead extended to 7-2 on Kenny Whittaker's unassisted score with 6:07 left in the third quarter before the St. Mary's offense began to rally.

Gordy Long scored twice in a 4-1 SMC run to end the third quarter that cut the Seahawks' deficit to two goals entering the fourth quarter.  Stewart D'Ambrogi, who had a game-best five points on two goals and three assists, assisted on a Taylor Cook goal, then scored the game-tying goal with 9:27 left in regulation.   Two minutes later, Reid scored what proved to be the game-winner, and Banick added the insurance with 1:30 left to send Stevenson to the title game.
