Christopher Newport Trio Named to 2014 VaSID College Division All-State Golf Team
With three overall selections, the Christopher Newport University
golf team had the most players on the 2014 Virginia Sports
Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Golf
teams, released early Tuesday morning. Senior Jonathan
Howard led the way as a first team All-State selection,
while Matt DiSalvo and Sam
Robinson were each tabbed as second team All-State
picks.
It is the second straight year the Captains featured a first team
All-State selection as Howard joins Brian Jaeger as the
only first team All-State picks in program history. The Ashburn,
Va. native was the CAC Player of the Year after winning the
Conference Championship Tournament. It was his first career win and
the Captains' first conference champion since John Kokoruda in
1976. Howard ranked second on the team in stroke average, with a
76.5 mark, and added a pair of top ten finishes in 2013-14. In the
fall, Howard finished tied for seventh in a field of primarily NCAA
Division I players at the George Mason Patriot Intercollegiate,
including a season-low round of 70 on the opening round of
competition.
DiSalvo, a sophomore, and Robinson, a junior, each collected second
team All-State honors. DiSalvo led the Captains with a 75.8 stroke
average in 2013-14 and was a first team All-Conference selection.
Robinson also was named a first team All-CAC selection after
posting a 76.8 stroke average in 16 rounds this season. Both
players finished with a pair of top ten finishes, as DiSalvo
finished third in the West Cup and Robinson finished fourth in the
CAC Championship.
The Captains captured their first Capital Athletic Conference
Championship in the Spring, and averaged 306.1 as a team.
