Defending Champion Wesley Will Host the 2013 CAC Golf Championship Saturday And Sunday

The 2012-13 athletic season has been heavily influenced by the transition from a nine-team conference (last year) to a 10-team affiliation (next year).

CAC Golf has been the most affected, as only three of the conference’s seven institutions sponsor the sport.  But that will only be a one-year situation - the CAC will be back to five teams in 2013-14, and there are several schools considering adding the sport for the 2014-15 season in hopes of having enough members to apply for an NCAA automatic bid for the championship team.

This year, the three teams vying for the CAC title include Marymount, Wesley and York.  Wesley will host the championship Saturday (4/27) and Sunday (4/28) at Wild Quail Golf & Country Club in Wyoming, Del.

Led by Coach Rick McCall, Wesley has won three of the five previous CAC titles, including the 2012 crown.  Senior Robert Ehrhardt, the reigning CAC Player of the Year and a four-time CAC Golfer of the Week this season, returns to the championship to defend his 2012 CAC individual title.

In addition to the action on the course, an annual highlight of the championship is the selection of the Andrew Geyer Memorial Award winner.  The award, presented by Wesley College, remembers a former Wolverine All-CAC athlete who was also a Dean’s List student and active in his community.    The award recognizes a CAC golfer annually for “outstanding academic credentials, athletics, citizenship and community service.”

Here is a brief look at each team heading into the season:

MARYMOUNT looks to battle for its first CAC golf championship behind the strong play of three-time All-CAC honoree Peter Johns.  Johns was a second team All-CAC performer from 2010-12 and comes into this year’s championships with a 78.9 stroke average, the fourth best in the league.  Sophomores Brad Johnson and Mark Curtis average in the 85’s this year with Curtis garnering All-CAC recognition as a freshman.

WESLEY will look to defend its 2012 Conference Championship at its home course with defending individual champion Robert Ehrhardt leading the pack.  Ehrhardt has shot a 4-under 67 in the second round in each of his last two tournaments and owns a CAC-best 74.9 stoke average on the year.  Freshman Mason Mendoza and All-CAC performer Clayton Bunting round out a solid top three for the Wolverines.  Freshman Cole Messick and senior Madison Leone, who was the CAC Field Hockey Co-Player of the Year, will battle it out for the fourth spot in the lineup.

YORK enters the Capital Athletic Conference tournament looking to challenge for a conference championship for the second time in school history. The Spartans are led by junior Kevin Long as he boasts a season average of 76.2 in 13 rounds. Sophomore David Boslough and junior Travis Oot are the next Spartans in line as Boslough averages 81.2 strokes per round while Oot is just behind him at 81.6.
