Wesley Tied For 9th Out Of 35 Teams After First Day Of NCAA Golf Tournament
No. 24 Wesley College's Will Scarborough shot a 72 to tie for fifth place after the first round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the Chateau Elan Resort. His effort led the Wolverines, playing on the Woodlands course on the first day, to a tie for ninth place through 18 holes.
Scarborough's one-over par round placed him in a four-way tie for fifth after the first day. Scotty Harris, Jr. of No. 3 St. John Fisher sits atop the leaderboard after shooting a three-under 68.
Wesley, meanwhile, is in a four-way tie for ninth. Among the other three teams tied with 311 is No. 1 Methodist. Just 10 strokes, however, separate the Wolverines from second place No. 16 Skidmore. No. 6 University of La Verne sits in first place after the first round by a comfortable 10 stroke margin over Skidmore. The Leopards shot a 291 in the opening round and are the lone school with multiple players in the top 10 on the leaderboard.
Scarborough started out with three birdies through the first
five holes. He turned in one more birdie, on the 16th
hole.
Andrew Geyer shot the second lowest round for the Wolverines on the
par-71, 6,738 yard Woodlands Course. The junior finished with
a 78, tied for 52nd. He started out slowly, with three
bogeys, but notched pars on each of the next six holes and had a
birdie on the 15th hole.
Michael Rushin finished one shot back in a tie for 62nd. After scoring a birdie on the eighth hole, the senior ran into some problems on the back nine before a birdie on the 18th hole.
CAC Player of the Year Chris Osberg is tied for 99th after an 82 in the opening round. He finished strong, after a five hole rough spot on the back nine, the sophomore birdied 16 to get back on track.
Riley Powers rounded out the Wesley contingent with an 86, tied for 144th. He had his lone birdie on the third hole.
All 180 golfers in the 35 team field will switch courses for the second round. Wesley will begin on the 10th hole of the par-71, 7,030 yard Chateau Course, beginning at 8:00 AM. After the completion of Wednesday's second round, the tournament will be cut to the top 23 teams and the five best individuals not on those 23 teams. The remaining field will take part in the final 36 holes of the 72-hole event on Thursday and Friday, May 15 and 16.
