Basketball Championship Doubleheader Set for Christopher Newport on Saturday
Women's Bracket | Men's Bracket
The Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport will be the host site for both the CAC men's and women's basketball championships on Saturday, marking the second time in the last three years that both basketball title games will be at the same site (Salisbury hosted both in 2014-15).
On the women's side, top-seeded Christopher Newport (24-2) welcomes second-seeded Mary Washington (23-3) for a rematch of last year's semifinals. It will mark the first championship meeting between the two sides. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
CNU, ranked No. 8 in the nation by the WBCA, will compete in its second CAC title game and first since the 2013-14 season. After receiving a first-round bye, the Captains downed fourth-seeded York 73-52 in Thursday's semifinals.
Defending champion UMW, ranked No. 19 by the WBCA, is playing in the CAC championship for the third straight year, the fifth time in the last six seasons, and the 16th time in program history. The Eagles received a first-round bye in the CAC Tournament and held off third-seeded Marymount 56-54 in Thursday's semis.
The Captains and Eagles split their regular season matchups, with both squads winning at home. CNU notched a 75-67 triumph on Jan. 18, while UMW secured a 74-69 victory on Feb. 1.
On the men's side, top-seeded CNU (24-2) will host second-seeded Salisbury (20-6) at 4:30 p.m., marking the third straight year that the Captains and Sea Gulls will square off for the conference crown. Each of the past two title games have come down to the wire, with Salisbury edging the Captains 58-57 in 2014-15 and CNU returing the favor last winter with a 68-67 overtime win.
CNU, ranked No. 3 in the nation by D3hoops.com, enters Saturday's title tilt on an 18-game winning streak. The Captains will be making their fourth straight championship game appearance after rolling past fourth-seeded Marymount 78-53 in Thursday's semifinals.
Salisbury, ranked 20th in the nation, is making its third straight and sixth overall appearance in the title game. The Sea Gulls defeated third-seeded York in a thrilling double-overtime contest in Thursday's semifinals, 86-80.
The Captains and Sea Gulls split their regular season games, with both sides defending home court by the slimmest of margins. Salisbury won 59-58 on Dec. 18, while CNU won 55-53 on Jan. 25
