Christopher Newport Men's Basketball Outlasts NYU, Advances to NCAA Sweet 16
In a thrilling back-and-forth NCAA second round matchup at the Freeman Center, fourth-ranked Christopher Newport extended its season with a 67-64 triumph over NYU on Saturday night.
With the win, the Captains (28-1) advance to the Sweet 16 for the fifth time in program history and first time since the 1997-98 season. CNU will meet Keene State (20-10), a 72-71 winner over Middlebury, at a location to be determined.
This marks the third time in the last four years that a CAC men's basketball team has advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
The game came down to the closing seconds, as NYU had several opportunities to tie the contest or take the lead as time winded down, but the Captains defense came up with key stops in crunch time to preserve the win.
Marcus Carter had a huge second half for the Captains, scoring 17 of his team-high 21 points, including numerous clutch buckets in the closing minutes. Carter also grabbed 12 boards and blocked three shots in the victory. Aaron McFarland scored 19 for the Captains, 14 of which came in the first half, while Tim Daly posted nine points, eight rebounds and three steals.
