Mary Washington Rolls Past DeSales into NCAA Men's Basketball Sweet 16: Wesley Falls to Virginia Wesleyan
Mary Washington posted a dominating 77-49 victory over DeSales in Ashland Va. on Saturday to advance to the NCAA Men's Basketball Sweet 16 for the first time ever, while Wesley saw its season come to a close with 79-74 loss at Virginia Wesleyan.
UMW (24-5), the 2014 CAC Champions, will face Virginia Wesleyan on Friday in the Sweet 16, with game time and location to be determined on Sunday.
Junior Taylor Johnson led the Eagles with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Bradley Riester scored 19 points and also added eight boards. Dom Morra scored 16 points to go with four assists and two steals.
The game began with the lead switching hands twice in the opening two minutes, but then UMW reeled off 15 straight points to take a 21-8 lead with 9:49 left in the first half. The catalyst in the run Morra, who hit four first-half three pointers.
After a Bulldog basket with 9:14 to play, the Eagles went on another 12-0 spurt, limiting DeSales (19-10) to two points in a 15:20 span. Riester connected for nine first half points, including six in the stretch. UMW's lead grew to as many as 26 points in the half, and the Eagles led, 38-15, at halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles continued their defensive intensity, extending the lead to 30 at 61-31 with 7:29 to play, and led by as many as 38 before claiming a 77-49 final.
Mary Washington shot 45.6% from the floor in the game (26-57), making 12-of-32 three pointers, and finishing 13-20 from the free throw line. DeSales was limited to 27.8% from the field (15-54), making 8-32 three point attempts, and finished 11-18 from the free throw line.
Wesley's record-breaking season came to an end at 23-4 overall with the five-point loss to to Virginia Wesleyan (24-6).
Wayne Lennon led five Wolverines in double figures with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting along with 12 rebounds and a pair of blocks. David Langan also notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Early in the second period, Wesley trailed by as many as 41-29 with 19:30 remaining. Both teams traded buckets for the next several minutes but with the Navy & White trailing, 52-42 with 12 minutes left, Lennon and Langan led Wesley to 11-straight points, giving the Wolverines a 53-52 advantage with 9:51 left in regulation.
Once again the teams would trade buckets until a triple by Youngblood gave Wesley a two point lead with 9:25 remaining. Virginia Wesleyan then went on a 12-2 run to retake a 66-58 lead with just over even minutes left.
The Marlins extended their late second half advantage to as many as 10 points with 3:46 left but a resilient Wolverines team would just not go away. Wesley cut the deficit to just a single possession with just over a minute and a half remaining, but a pair of free throws by the Marlins sealed the win.
In the ECAC South Region semifinals, Marymount closed out its season with an 81-75 loss at Stevenson. The Saints finish the season at 16-12 overall.
Danny Ferry led the Saints with a game-high 17 points while Jesse Konadu also added 15. Reed Scott and Antonio Rouse chipped in 12 points apiece, with Scott also posting 13 rebounds for a double-double.
Marymount took the early lead and held its host scoreless through the first 5:31 of the game. In an opening frame that saw four lead changes in fewer than five minutes, Stevenson would eventually battle back to take the lead at 13-11. With 8:14 to play, the Mustangs overtook the Saints for good – closing out the half with an 18-7 run and a 37-25 lead.
Coming out of the break, Stevenson picked up right where it left off – up by as much as 19 points only five minutes into the second half. The Saints were not to be outdone easily, however, and proceeded to chip away at the Mustang lead little by little. Marymount worked its way all the way back to a minuscule four-point deficit, down 72-68 with just under five to play. The remaining ticks saw the Saints continue to battle, but the Stevenson lead ultimately proved insurmountable.
