St. Mary's (27-4), playing in the national quarterfinals for the second time in the last three years, had four players finish in double figures in the scoring column, led by James Davenport with 16 points. Davenport hit half of SMC's six three-point goals, all in the second half.

SMC's defense kept Mary Hardin Baylor in check through the first 29 minutes, enabling the Seahawks to take a 32-26 lead to the halftime break and build that advantage to 51-42 with 11 minutes left in the game.
MHB (26-5) then got hot and the Seahawks' long-range shots started hitting off the front of the rim, allowing the Crusaders to outscore SMC 27-15 down the stretch. Sidney Deloach hit consecutive jumpers to start the run, and Orr followed with three buckets within a 1:40 stretch to cut highlight the charge.
St. Mary's maintained control of the game, and Hill's bucket with 2:46 left gave SMC a 64-62 lead. Crusader guard Cory Meals, who finished with 15 points, then drained his second three-point goal of the game to give MHB a lead it never surrendered.
