St. Mary's Will Play Buffalo State Friday At Rochester, N.Y., In NCAA Div. III Men's Basketball Sweet 16
No. 13 St. Mary's College of Maryland will be traveling to Rochester, N.Y., for the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Sectionals. University of Rochester will serve as one of four sectional host sites this weekend, March 11-12.
In making their third trip to the Sweet 16 in four years, St. Mary's (24-5) will be joining a formidable group this weekend in No. 2 Middlebury College (26-1), No. 17 Rochester (22-5), and Buffalo State College (23-6). The Seahawks will be featured in the first game Friday night as they take on Buffalo State at 5:30 pm followed by host Rochester and Middlebury at 8:00 pm in the 1,800-seat Louis Alexander Palestra.
Tickets are priced at $7 for adults, $4 for students with ID and senior citizens. The Palestra doors will open at 4:30 pm Friday and 6:00 pm on Saturday.
ST. MARY'S: St. Mary's punched its sectional ticket with their dominant 68-53 victory over No. 6 Randolph-Macon College this past Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 1,200. The two-time defending Capital Athletic Conference champions, the Seahawks entered the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 2 in the final NCAA Division III Middle Atlantic Region Poll. The program is now 6-2 in tournament action in its third trip to the NCAAs.
BUFFALO STATE: The Buffalo State Bengals, ranked fourth in the final NCAA Division III East Region, are playing in their 13th NCAA Tournament and first since 2003. The winner of 18 State University of New York Athletic Conference Championships, Buffalo State advanced to this weekend's action with an impressive 96-72 win over Johnson & Wales University in the second round. The Bengals are currently riding a 13-game win streak and own an 11-12 mark in the NCAA Tournament play.
MIDDLEBURY: The Middlebury Panthers, who hail from Vermont, are enjoying their fourth consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament after making their first-ever appearance in 2008. The 2011 New England Small Colleges Athletic Conference champions, Middlebury is coming off a 79-53 triumph over No. 23 Western Connecticut State University in second round action on March 5. The Panthers, the No. 1 team in the final NCAA Division III Northeast Region Poll, are 3-3 in NCAA action.
ROCHESTER: The Rochester Yellowjackets come into this weekend's action ranked third in the final NCAA Division III East Region Poll and are making their 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Rochester claimed the NCAA national title in 1990 while finishing second in 1992 and 2005 as well as garnering a fourth-place finish in 2002. The Yellowjackets defeated MIT, 60-52, for the right to advance to the "Sweet 16". Rochester boasts an impressive 27-11 record in NCAA action.
