St. Mary's Men's Basketball Falls In NCAA Division III Tournament Elite 8 Game Vs. Middlebury, 65-50

St. Mary's drive  through the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament ended Saturday when the CAC Champion Seahawks lost an Elite 8 game vs. 2nd-ranked Middlebury, 65-50, in Rochester, N.Y. 

SMC, in its first-ever national quarterfinal-round contest, finished with a 25-5 overall record.  Middlebury will take a 27-1 overall mark to the Division III Final Four next weekend in Salem, Va.

Senior guard Alex Franz, the 2011 CAC Player of the Year, shared game-high scoring honors with 16 points in his final career game for the Seahawks.  Franz also dished out five of SMC's seven assists in the game.

Chris Hutchinson, who hit two of SMC's three long-range shots in the game, scored 10 points for SMC, which held a double-digit lead midway through the first half before Middlebury rallied to within two points at halftime (27-25).

Jake Wolfin led the winners with 16 points.  Ryan Sharry chipped in a double double for Middlebury with 11 points and 10 boards while Andrew Locke just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine caroms.

Middlebury finished with a strong shooting performance, connecting on 26 of 47 field goal attempts (55.3%), including 4-for-10 from three-point range.  St. Mary's knocked down 20 of 57 shots (35.1%), including just 3-for-12 from long range.
