Wesley's Men's Basketball Season Ends With 93-69 Loss At Franklin & Marshall In First Round Of NCAA Tournament
Wesley senior guards Evan Martin and Rashawn Johnson scored 16 and 14 points, respectively, but the CAC champion Wolverines dropped a 93-69 decision at Franklin & Marshall Friday in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Wolverines, who finish the season with an 18-10 overall record, were held to a 33.3% shooting performance (25-for-75) by the F&M defense, including 6-for-24 from three-point range. The host Diplomats, meanwhile, drained 58.3% from the field (42-for-72), including a number of inside buckets by F&M's taller front line.
Johnson scored all of his 14 points in the first half, but F&M's inside game paved the way to gaining a 52-36 lead at the break. Martin poured in all of his 16 points in the final 20 minutes. Alphonzo Wright also chipped in 10 scores and a team-high nine rebounds for Wesley.
F&M, which put six players in double figures, including all five starters, was led by James McNally with 18 points and Anthony Brooks with 17.
The Diplomats (23-5) used its size to dominate on the board, gaining a 53-31 rebounding advantage in the game. F&M had as many offensive rebounds (16) as Wesley had defensive caroms. McNally and Daniel Selig (12 pts.) shared game-high rebounding honors, each with 11, and both posted double-doubles.
