Fourth-Seeded Marymount Men's Basketball Upsets St. Mary's In OT; Saints Face Wesley In Saturday's Title Game

Marymount's Chapmen Canady drained a three-pointer as time ran out in regulation to force overtime, then the Saints scored the last six points in overtime to pull off the 86-81 win at St. Mary's and earn a berth in the 2009 CAC title game at Wesley Saturday at 2 p.m.

Marymount (15-12) which finished fourth in the regular season, battled back from a 13-point deficit midway through the second half to earn a berth in the CAC title game against the second-seeded Wesley (17-9), which held off third-seeded Mary Washington by a 98-79 margin.

The 2009 CAC title game in Dover, Del., will tip off at 2 p.m. Saturday (2/28).  In just its second season as a member of the CAC, Wesley will be vying for its first conference championship.  Marymount will try to win its third title, with the previous crowns captured in 1992 and 2000.

Tarek Ammoury paced Marymount with a game-high 24 points while Ronnie Barbour (14), Elvis Ellis (12) and Patrick Prewitt (10) also contributed in double figures. 

Alex Franz led four SMC (21-5) players into double figures, finished with team-highs of 23 points and six assists.  Alex Irmer chipped in a double-double with 16 scores and 12 rebounds while Camontae Griffin and Calvin Wise each totaled 14 points.

Marymount held a 30-29 lead at the break, but St. Mary's quickly took control in the second half and built a double-digit advantage.   SMC's lead peaked at 13 points (56-43) on a Wise layup with 11:23 left in the game.

The Saints put together a 19-8 run over the next five minutes, finally taking a 62-61 lead on a Barbour three-point shot with 6:23 left in regulation. Neither team could gain more than a one-point advantage the rest of the way until Franz hit a three-point shot with eight seconds left, giving the hosts a 73-70 lead.  After three time outs, Canady's bomb at the buzzer sent the teams to an extra five minutes.

In OT, Marymount took the lead three times before SMC battled back to tie the score.  The Seahawks finally took their only lead of overtime (81-80) on a Wise free throw with 1:33 left.

A minute later, after two offensive rebounds, Ellis scored an inside hoop to start a six-point run over the final 32 seconds to clinch the victory.  It was the Saints' first win in three tries this season against St. Mary's, which is the top-ranked team in the Middle Atlantic Region.

In the other semifinal at Wesley, senior guard Rashawn Johnson fired home a game-high 29 points, including eight three-point goals, and led four Wolverines into double figures to lead the hosts to the 19-point victory.  Evan Martin (19), Sean McAndrew (11) and James Stratton (10) also contributed for Wesley.

Brandon Altmann posted a double-double to lead Mary Washington, finishing with 23 points and 12 caroms.  Matt Hale (14), Matt Storus (12) and Kiernan Whitworth (10) also hit double digits for the Eagles.

Wesley took a 43-36 lead to the halftime break, but Altmann cut the gap to one point (55-54) with a layup with 14:49 left in regulation.  Wesley answered with a Stratton three-point goal, which ignited a 15-2 run.   A Rudy Thomas layup with 11:48 left gave WC a 69-56 advantage.  UMW closed to within eight points once, but Wesley led by double digits for the final nine minutes of the game.
