Three from CAC Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Baseball Team

Salisbury seniors Tom LaBriola and Pete Grasso and Christopher Newport junior Craig Johnson were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Baseball First Team, announced Thursday. 

The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes from eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. First team Academic All-District honorees, advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team ballot, where first-, second-, and third-team All-America honorees will be announced on May 31. 

LaBriola is an exercise science major and has posted a 3.80 GPA during his time at Salisbury. A team captain, he helped guide the team to its second consecutive and 14th overall CAC championship this season. LaBriola boasts a .328 batting average with 54 hits, 15 doubles, two triples, and three home runs. He has also recorded a team-high 49 RBIs, 41 runs scored, a slugging percentage of .513, and an on-base percentage of .430. For his career LaBriola has totaled a batting average of .370, 153 hits, 32 doubles, three triples, and seven home runs.

Grasso is an exercise science major posting a 3.40 GPA during his academic career. He has posted eye popping numbers from both the plate and on the mound this season for the maroon and gold. Grasso has recorded an 8-0 mark this season on the mound while also tallying three saves. He has an ERA of 1.47, the lowest of his Salisbury career, while also totaling 82 strikeouts over 79.2 innings of work allowing just 60 hits and 13 earned runs.

From the plate Grasso has 64 hits during his senior season including 11 doubles, two triples, and eight home runs while driving in 43 RBI. He has recorded a batting average of .398, an on-base percentage of .466, and a slugging percentage of .640. For his career Grasso ranks in the top 10 in eight statistical categories including sixth in games played (163), first in runs (196), second in hits (244), sixth in both doubles (41) and home runs (20), first in triples (12), and is tied for second in RBI with 173.

CNU's Johnson becomes  the first CNU baseball player in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. The Captains' third-year outfielder carried a 3.83 cumulative GPA into the spring season, majoring in biochemistry. Aspiring to go to medical school and become a doctor after his undergraduate career at CNU, Johnson is a two-time Academic All-Conference selection and is in line to make it three-for-three this year when the Capital Athletic Conference announces the team this summer.

The 6-3, 200-pound right fielder started 35 of 37 games played this season, ranking second on the team in hitting with a .363 average. He delivered 12 extra-base hits, including three home runs, while driving in 24 runs and scoring 33 teams, also ranking second on the team. Johnson led the team in on-base percentage with a .458 clip powered by 45 hits and 21 walks, while finishing the year with 65 total bases. He was also a dangerous outfielder defensively, showing off an impressive arm in the outfield with a pair of assists. The Chesterfield, Va. native has registered a .353 career average through his first three seasons with 56 runs scored, 36 RBI, and 19 extra-base hits.
