The selection marks the 18th overall for second-seeded and fifth-ranked Salisbury (31-7), which is good for a tie for 15th-best in Division III. SU is one of only two schools in the nation to reach the NCAA tournament for at least the last 13 seasons (the State University of New York at Cortland at 19 is the other).

Salisbury comes into the tournament with a 36-35 (.507) all-time record in the postseason, including a 26-23 (.531) mark under 12th-year Head Coach Doug Fleetwood.

The six-team NCAA Newport News Regional includes top seed and host Christopher Newport University (30-7), No. 3 seed Shenandoah University (29-11), No. 4 seed Rowan University (30-13) and No. 6 seed Messiah College (19-23).

Salisbury won its 10th Capital Athletic Conference tournament and with it, the league's automatic qualifier to the field of 56.

The Sea Gulls dropped their opening game in the 2011 south regional to Piedmont College in Millington, Tenn., before winning four straight elimination games to earn the program's third trip to the College World Series.
